Memorandum for Ralph M. Hockley (1925–2023)

With great sadness, the Hockley family and extended relatives announce the passing of Ralph M. Hockley on the evening of November 8, 2023, at the age of 98. Ralph was a survivor who faced many challenges throughout his long life. However, the cancer he valiantly fought against in the last six months was his greatest adversary.
Ralph is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn (also known as Mrs. Harris from BAHS), his son, Cliff, his daughter, Denise, and his stepchildren, Kris, Heidi, and Kirk. He will also be missed by many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as numerous friends and extended family in the U.S. and around the world.
Ralph lived a remarkable life that was a part of the history he experienced. He faced many challenges with courage and always took the road less traveled. His outlook on life was characterized by optimism, even in the most difficult circumstances. He placed social responsibility at the forefront and always sought to improve every situation he encountered.
Family was Ralph’s greatest treasure. He was fortunate and knew how to appreciate it. He married twice and loved both his wives, Eva and Carolyn, deeply. The bond with his children was strong; he was always interested in their changes and achievements, supporting their goals.
Ralph received numerous honors for his service in World War II and the Korean War, including the Legion of Honor Chevalier from France, the Bronze Star from Korea, and the Department of Army Decoration for Meritorious Civilian Services, signed by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence.
There is much more to say, but it is difficult to do justice to all the facets of his life. His obituary will be published next week. In the end, he was my father, a man, a legend, and often a hero to me—someone larger than life, who held my hand as a little girl while walking along the Seine, telling me that I would never grow old. In my heart, he never will.
We will miss you, Dad.
