How Bonn American High School Shaped a Life: An Alumni Interview
Introduction
Attending Bonn American High School (BAHS) is an experience that leaves a lasting impact on its students. The school’s unique environment, rich with diversity and international perspectives, has shaped countless lives in remarkable ways. In this interview, one of our alumni „Roberto Leopoldi“ shares how BAHS influenced his life path, instilled valuable skills, and created memories that remain vivid to this day.

Q1: How do you think your time at Bonn American High School influenced your life path?
Attending Bonn American High School (BAHS) set me on a completely different life trajectory, one I could never have anticipated at the time. Looking back, it was a pivotal crossroads that shaped my future in profound ways.
My early aspiration was to attend university in Italy, study political science or jurisprudence, and join the Italian foreign service. However, I soon discovered that Italian universities did not recognize American high school diplomas. This unexpected twist led me to enroll at the University of Maryland’s Munich Campus, where fate intervened again.
On the first day of Freshman English, I chose to sit next to an attractive young lady, not knowing she would become my future wife. Following her to Texas, I decided to pivot from a career in diplomacy to one in international business, where I found myself using many of the same skills I would have employed in the foreign service.
That single decision I made at 15 altered the course of my life in ways I could never have imagined, and I owe much of it to my time at BAHS.
Q2: How did the international and multicultural atmosphere at Bonn American High School prepare you for your later life?
I still remember my first day at Bonn American High School (BAHS). I had transferred from a German Jesuit Gymnasium, where most students shared a similar culture, socio-economic background, and values—a relatively homogenous environment. BAHS was quite the opposite.
It felt like an explosion of experiences, with students from a wide range of nationalities, cultures, and life stories. The diversity was striking, and the energy was palpable. Many of my peers were bright, ambitious, and brought unique perspectives to every interaction. It became clear early on that we had a number of students who would go on to accomplish incredible things.
This international and multicultural atmosphere at BAHS taught me adaptability, open-mindedness, and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life and nationalities. Those skills have been invaluable throughout my personal and professional journey, helping me navigate and thrive in a globalized world.

Q3: What are your most vivid memories of Bonn American High School?
Coming from the German education system, I had never experienced activities centered around students‘ social lives and school pride. I vividly remember attending my first football pep rally—it was an entirely new experience for me.
The school spirit at BAHS was something I had never encountered before. It made school so much more engaging and fun. While we played sports at my German school, it never had the same level of involvement and enthusiasm from students, administration, and parents as I experienced at BAHS.
I remember going home after that first pep rally and telling my parents I had made the right decision to transfer to BAHS. Those moments of connection, excitement, and community remain some of my fondest memories.
Q4: If you could look back at the person you were as a young student, what would you want to tell him?
My advice would be to remain open to what life has in store for you. Don’t shut off opportunities just because you’re unsure of where they may lead—you might be surprised by the unexpected paths they open.

At the same time, don’t lose sight of yourself or your values along the way. Develop a strong work ethic early, as it will sustain you through life’s challenges. Whatever you choose to do, do it with pride and excellence. Learn as much as you can—you never know when that knowledge might come in handy.
In Italian, there’s a saying: „Impara l’arte e mettila da parte“—“Learn the art and save it.” It reminds us to gather knowledge and skills whenever we have the chance, even if they seem useless at the moment. Life may call upon us to dig deep into our reserves of knowledge and abilities during unexpected times, and it’s often the things we least expected to need that prove invaluable.

So, be curious, work hard, and trust that everything you learn has the potential to serve you in ways you can’t yet imagine.
