Embracing Diversity and Discovering Self Between Two Cultures

In 1973, after a transformative year in the United States, I returned to Bonn, Germany. The American educational experience had left an indelible mark on me, making it challenging to reintegrate into the traditional German school system. Recognizing this, my parents made a pivotal decision: they enrolled me in the Bonn American High School on the Rhine (BAHS). This choice would profoundly shape my future.

At BAHS, I discovered I wasn’t the only German student; several compatriots also sought an international education. Many of these classmates have become lifelong friends. The school was a unique enclave—a protected, almost elite environment offering students opportunities beyond our wildest dreams. The array of subjects and extracurricular activities was vast, especially for that era.

I was particularly drawn to Industrial Arts and Physical Education. Although not an exceptional athlete at the time—a passion that blossomed later—the daily physical activity was invigorating. More importantly, the camaraderie we developed through group activities fostered a sense of belonging and community.

Another invaluable course was Typing. Learning the ten-finger typing system on state-of-the-art IBM Selectric typewriters—a marvel of technology then—proved to be an indispensable skill in my professional life.

The years at BAHS flew by, but the memories remain vivid. The school’s spirit, the close-knit community, and the unique experiences left a lasting imprint on me. After graduation, our paths diverged, but over time, many of us reconnected through alumni reunions, social media, and chance encounters.

Today, nearly five decades later, I reflect with immense gratitude on that period. Many friendships have endured, and the experiences at BAHS are integral to my personal narrative. Although the school no longer exists, its legacy lives on in each of us who spent part of our youth there.

In 2017, I took an active role in the alumni community. I established a platform and provided the technical infrastructure for approximately 1,500 former students to connect via social media. This sustained interaction has been instrumental in preserving our shared history and nurturing our bonds.

Thanks to this initiative and various event announcements, we have successfully organized two reunion gatherings in Bonn. These events are not only opportunities to rekindle old friendships but also a testament to the enduring spirit of BAHS and the deep connections among its alumni.

    Why am I doing this?
In a time when so many focus on negativity, tear others down, and spread bad vibes, I want to do the exact opposite: preserve memories, bring people together, and share something positive.
Bonn is my hometown—I was born here, and I love this city. That’s why it’s important to me to create a lasting connection for those who spent a significant part of their childhood and youth here. I see myself as an ambassador for Bonn, welcoming alumni back and showing them how the city has changed—while proving that it will always remain a part of their home.
When former BAHS students visit Bonn, I take them on a walk down memory lane. We visit familiar places, grab a currywurst, and relive old times together. And time and again, I hear them say: „Jürgen, this was amazing, coming back here. So many memories.“
Seeing their happy faces, feeling the energy they take home—that’s what drives me. This is more than just a hobby for me; it’s a passion. I invest time and money to keep this alumni network alive because I want to give something back. The BAHS experience gave me so much—now it’s my turn to pay it forward.
The complainers can stay where they are. I focus on those who see the value in this connection and bring it to life.
