A Teacher, a Coach, an Extraordinary Man

Mel Thake was more than just a coach – he was a mentor, a role model, and a defining figure for many who knew him. As the football coach at the Bonn American High School (BAHS) from at least 1974 to 1977, he played a key role in creating a culture of excellence, teamwork, and inclusivity within the sports program.

Together with his close friend and fellow coach Marshall Warfield, he fostered an environment where both performance and character were valued. His support went far beyond sports – many students found in him a reliable mentor who guided them through both academic and personal challenges.

A Life Full of Passion and Diversity

Mel Thake was not only a dedicated teacher and coach but also an exceptional athlete. As a First Team Small College All-American football player, he made it to the final round of cuts with the Minnesota Vikings as a defensive back – a testament to his skill and determination.

In 1967, he competed in the World Lumberjack Championships in Wisconsin and earned an impressive 4th place. But his talents didn’t stop at sports – Mel was also a gifted photographer and poet, capturing moments in both images and words.

Additionally, he was an outstanding archer, who kept his larder well-stocked with his precision and skill. His versatility and passion for diverse activities set him apart.

Memories of a Remarkable Man

Mel was also a family man with a big heart. One particularly moving memory was his poem upon the birth of his daughter – a heartfelt reflection that left many in tears.

Those who knew him remember countless moments shared with him – whether as a co-coach in track and field, on trips, skiing, or in the darkroom developing photographs. He also showcased his talents on the basketball court, and many competitive and fun games in the Embassy League in Bonn remain unforgettable.

An image that lingers is Mel walking the halls of BAHS, puffing on a large cigar and singing „The Tennessee Waltz“ – a scene that still brings a smile today.

A special reunion took place shortly before his death in Wisconsin, when he revisited the site of the Lumberjack Championships in Hayward. The memories of those days and the stories he shared left a lasting impact.

Mel Thake left a lasting mark on the lives of many. His influence as a teacher, coach, and friend will never be forgotten.

Those who knew him remember his passion, warmth, and tireless dedication to others. His legacy lives on – in the stories told about him and in the values he instilled.

These memories were inspired by Hunter Marshall, Marshall Warfield, and John Tate, who continue to honor him as a trailblazer and friend.
